About ChordBeam

ChordBeam

A real-time MIDI chord detector that tells you what you are playing — and why it sounds the way it does.

Origin

Why it exists

Most musicians learn to play before they learn to hear. You develop muscle memory for chord shapes, but the names stay fuzzy — you know it sounds like a gospel thing, a jazz thing, a sad thing, without knowing exactly what the chord is. ChordBeam was built to close that gap.

Connect a keyboard, play what you normally play, and ChordBeam tells you the chord name in real time. Not as a quiz — as a companion. The goal is that over time, seeing the name flash up while you play trains your ear and your understanding simultaneously.

It runs entirely in the browser using the Web MIDI API. No audio is processed or sent anywhere. Your playing stays between you and your keyboard.

Capabilities

What it does

Real-time detection

Every chord you play is named and analysed the moment you play it — no delay, no button press.

Deep harmonic context

See Roman numeral function, chord spelling, inversions, and related scales alongside the chord name.

Theory built in

The Theory Wheel and Chord Library connect what you hear with what it means — without leaving the app.

Any USB MIDI keyboard

Works with the Web MIDI API directly in Chrome. No drivers, no installations, no extra hardware.

Philosophy

The approach

ChordBeam is not a course, a subscription, or a gamified lesson plan. It is a tool that sits alongside your practice — quiet, instant, and always accurate. The guides and theory wheel exist to give context when you want it, not to interrupt your playing when you do not.

Every feature is optimised for the moment of playing: the chord name is large and immediate, the theory context is one tap away, and nothing requires you to stop what you are doing to get useful information.
