Start your musical journey with the essential chords
A chord is simply three or more notes played at the same time. Most beginner piano chords are triads, which consist of a root note, a third, and a fifth.
Chords are the building blocks of harmony. While a melody is like a single person talking, a chord is like a choir singing together in perfect agreement.
C · E · G
The most fundamental chord. Bright and stable.
G · B · D
A powerful, uplifting chord used in almost every pop song.
A · C · E
The relative minor of C. Sad and reflective.
F · A · C
A warm, grounded chord that provides great resolution.
E · G · B
Dark and moody, perfect for emotional ballads.
Start by playing each chord with your right hand using fingers 1 (thumb), 3 (middle), and 5 (pinky). Once you feel comfortable, try playing the root note with your left hand an octave lower.
The goal is to move between these chords smoothly. Try switching from C to G, then G to Am, and so on. Don't worry about speed yet—focus on accuracy and clear sound.
